Be Safe, Be Seen, Be Green…
October 15th, 2007After walking, cycling is the most sustainable and least polluting mode of transport that we have available to us. The environmental and health benefits are numerous and by choosing to travel by bicycle even just one day a week instead of taking the car it’s possible to make a big difference to our carbon footprint.
This year on October 28th, British Winter time officially starts as the clocks go back one hour resulting in darker evenings and an increased risk on the roads for cyclists. Visibility during this time is vital and a few safety precautions such as reflective clothing and front and back lights can help reduce the vulnerability of cyclists.
Online eco store, ECOutlet have recently expanded their range of cycling lights in time for the darker evenings and now offer several battery free options which are kinder to the environment and will help ensure cyclists get noticed by motorists this autumn.
Their bike light range includes a number of eco friendly options and cover kinetically powered battery free pedal lights, magneticallypowered dynamo bike lights and from Trevor Baylis, inventor and pioneer of wind up technology, the latest additions are compact wind up bicycle lights with no need for batteries or replacement bulbs.
Here in the UK we currently recycle just 4% of household batteries, that’s less than 1000 tonnes out of an average 20,000 to 30,000 tonnes of general purpose battery waste generated every year. Most batteries contain heavy metals including cadmium, lead and mercury. The casing of batteries disposed of in landfill can disintegrate over time and the result can mean heavy metals leaching into the soil and potentially reaching groundwater.
This coming winter, be safe, be seen and be green by opting for the battery free version.
