Energy Saving Measures
December 1st, 2007Some people - recently 2,500 scientists and many of the rest of us - believe that our carbon emissions are doing some pretty awful damage to our planet causing a change of climate that will have a dramatic effect on the lives of our children and their families. There are others who don’t believe a word of it!
We are not trying to tell anyone what to think! One of our aims at KHI Ltd and www.GreenPlanetInsulation.co.uk (our on-line D.I.Y store) is to help you to cut your expensive home fuel bills. How? After you insulate you turn down your heating, this cuts your fuel bills (and you produce less carbon).
Our homes are directly responsible for about a third of the nation’s CO2 (carbon) emissions. This is through using energy (gas, electricity, oil, coal ) for hot water, lighting, appliances and cooking. Of the energy used in our home about 60% is for heating the spaces we live in. From all sources, an average person in the UK is responsible for releasing 9.3 tonnes of CO2 every year - roughly five well filled hot air balloons. The challenge is for each of us to lose 3 of these in the next 20 years AND save lots of money year on year by doing it!
The following energy saving measures show you how much money you could save on bills in a year along with the carbon you could prevent from entering the atmosphere.
Cavity Wall Insulation £130 -£160pa/ one tonne (1000kg)
Loft Insulation (270-300mm;11-12 inches) £97 - £120pa/ 723 kg
Draught-proofing windows and doors £20 - £22pa/ 140 kg
Fill gaps (floors and skirting) £10-£20pa/ 130 kg
Hot Water Tank Jacket £10-£25pa/ 150 kg
Energy saving bulbs £10 each pa/ 140 kg
Double Glazing £80-£100pa/ 680 kg
Thermostat down 1 degree £50 -£60pa/ 300 kg
Dishwasher – used once less per week £4 pa/ 52kg
Tumble dryer - try hanging outside! £16pa/ 140kg
TV/chargers etc left on standby can save you 8% (1/12th) of your electricity bill and a washing machine run @30 degrees uses 40% less electricity per cycle.
Have you totted these up? To save money and cut carbon emissions - leave nothing on standby; boil only the amount of water you need; put lids on pans and use pans that fit size of hob/ring; close curtains but expose radiators. Almost all of us are wasting money – right now some amazing loft and cavity wall installations are available for just £149 – any home any size! Check out www.KhiEnergySaver.co.uk - and when it’s fine - try hanging out!
