Green Dressmaker Wins Eco Award
April 25th, 2008Durham-based Conscious Elegance, Ltd recently won the Environmental Agency/North Tyneside Council Business of the Year Award Winner 2007 award.
The judges decision was immediate and unanimous, due to the fact that Conscious Elegance is a completely green enterprise. The company strives for 100% sustainability, from the fabrics to the recycled packaging materials. No factories or sweatshops exist here and CE makes a point of sourcing from other small businesses, especially those that allow mums to earn an income while staying at home with their children.
Lori Del Genis, designer and founder, said, ‘Conscious Elegance is all about making easy choices that have far-reaching effects. Being eco-conscious can also mean thinking outside of the corporate box. For example, we offer fabric choices for vegan brides who wish to support their values with a dress that’s every bit as gorgeous as what they would see in the High-Street shop windows.’
To offer best value for the money, CE creates infant and children’s clothing from their client’s gowns at no extra charge. Lori says, ‘we don’t want to promote the one-time use of an item. We want our gowns to have lives beyond the wedding day and let the children be beautiful too. Since we’ve found that most love their dresses too much to want to take them off, we think that we’re onto something.’ The fabrics in the childrens’ clothing are the same as in the bridal gowns: organic and pesticide-free. They are perfect for sensitive skin and they are machine washable - always a plus but not usually expected in fancy clothes.
CE will also be offering children’s clothing as a new service in the autumn but will be focusing on bridal wear in the summer wedding season.
