Swallowtail Hill: The Ethical Store
November 30th, 2007Swallowtailhill.com is based at a Wealden farm near the ancient seaport of Rye, in East Sussex, England.
It began, as all the best businesses do, round the kitchen table.
Owners, Sarah and Christopher Broadbent were certain it ought to be possible to create an on-line shop that married conscience with convenience and had some good taste thrown in.
So they set out to source goods from all over the world with the very simple proviso that everything had to tick the right boxes - they had to be from a verifiable sustainable source, recycled, fair trade, organic or a combination of all four. And Sarah and Christopher (along with a hand picked panel of their closest friends) had to like them!
And so www.swallowtailhill.com was created. It offers stylish stuff for home and garden along with accessories, clothing and beauty products for Him and Her and all sorts of goodies for kids and children. In short – there’s something for everyone.
Sarah comments, “The business is as ethical as we can make it. Our small farm is 40 acres of traditional wildflower meadow, ancient woodland, hedgerow old and new, ponds, reed beds and free-range livestock - including Geoff the cockerel, Sid the goat and and Hilary the pig.
“We are climate neutral as an operation, and we use climate neutral suppliers wherever we can. We do all the other stuff you would expect to reduce our carbon footprint and to encourage sustainability. None of which means we disapprove of a decent lifestyle. Hence our shop. Ethical shopping for an ethical lifestyle but no hair shirts.”
