Olney Green Burial Ground
The Natural Alternative
We offer a natural alternative to the customary cemetery, crematorium or even graveyard burial.
Green Policies
Olney Green Burial Ground is situated on land, which for many years has been used for grazing and has become ‘improved pasture’. This means that the grazing regime and the use of nitrogen fertiliser has encouraged the stronger grasses in favour of meadow wild flowers.
The area currently being used for burials is fenced and the grass is allowed to grow naturally and has become a haven for grass loving wild life and numerous wild flower types are returning.
However, this will gradually change as the Memorial trees and supporting under story trees grow and the ground becomes shaded. Grasses will diminish in favour of woodland flowers such as bluebells, primrose, anemone and dogswood. In a similar way meadow wild life will gradually give way to woodland species.
Each winter areas around the Memorial trees are planted with supporting tree types such as thorn, field maple, holly and, predominantly, hazel, which can be coppiced periodically, providing an ideal environment for woodland wild flowers.
